i've had to incomplete a lot of classes this semester for personal reasons
but I'm actually really grateful because what it's taught me is that people are wonderful and trustworthy.

my hallmates and friends came to visit me, even though everyone is super busy with classwork and i didn't want to admit to myself i was actually in a life crisis
i gained new friendships with some incredibly strong people
i gained deeper friendships with friends who had gone through a lot, who could empathize with my struggles

my parents turned out to be adults i can trust and confide in, people who came to my side immediately when i needed it

the GRTs and housemasters, my medlinks, even my UROP supervisor, as well as MIT Medical and the S^3 deans have all been actively supportive

my professors, especially for small or new classes that are more flexible, have been amazingly accommodating and sympathetic
i've learned that the professors and staff think of us as people, not as the mythical genius MIT student who thrives on intellectual knowledge and has zero life issues
actually they've completely blown past my expectations in this regard. i don't think the struggles i face are that much more severe than the struggles other students here face, and everyone manages fine.

but i've come to be
okay with who i am

even more so now that i know that my friends believe in me, my professors and staff believe in me, and my family believes in me.

overall, i'm a really lucky person, and the world and MIT is a surprisingly wonderful place that confounds and delights me everyday.

===
other things i learned this semester: it's better to consistently show up for class even if you don't consistently get your work done before class, communicate with class staff, don't be afraid to ask for help whether it be for life or academic issues, don't be afraid to commandeer time in office hours even if you don't need the class for graduating (actually, you're paying tuition for it), resources are less strained than i think, it's better to go to class even 30 minutes late to show that you're trying than to give up and go to sleep.

more later, perhaps, as i think of things to addnrobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15422385347170954353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1913473802550629755.post-45830186738243401992012-05-01T20:48:00.000-04:002012-09-09T22:52:43.183-04:00Class Homepages Spring 2012This page links to my class's sites to save me some typing (will serve as my homepage) [posted 12 Feb 2012, 8:48 PM]
It turns out you can't delete posts, but you can overwrite their content. Except I already "deleted" the post from the blogger.com frontend, so how the heck do I edit the content of the post? @__@

Now that superuser exists, it's superuser.com to the rescue!

I found this tutorial:
http://crsouza.blogspot.com/2010/03/partial-least-squares-analysis-and.html

Sort of linked from here:
http://superuser.com/questions/56908/remove-deleted-posts-from-central-google-reader-cache
Except the superuser link is to a ruby script, and it was much more useful to just do it by hand when I just had my most recent post to "unblog" instead of bothering with trying to install ruby / run it on windows *shudders*

I just changed the "post options" timestamp to 10 minutes later, refreshed google reader, and voila my private content is gone and instead you see... this post :)nrobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15422385347170954353noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1913473802550629755.post-11396509443101195052012-04-04T19:37:00.001-04:002012-04-05T02:35:31.494-04:00evaluations, sexism, startup cofounders

what are?

In 21w.789 I was talking to a classmate about her project and asked her, "how was the localization implemented?" She said, "I like interaction design, so once the backend is done, I'd like to work on the GUI. I know, playing into gender stereotypes..."

Hi guys. This is the universe we live in, that we cannot simply feel secure in who we are and what we like, in who we are as individuals, but instead feel compelled to be Women who are going against stereotype or following the stereotype -- but either way, the stereotype exists and defines our choices.

I learned the interesting fact yesterday that every semester in one of my course 2 classes, accusations of sexism or hitting on people come up in anonymous evaluations. (I was surprised -- I've never thought of TAs or UAs being sexist, I've always seen them as human beings and possible role models, perhaps fulfilling or not fulfilling gender stereotypes). I don't have any data on any other classes, but it's fascinating that this issue is on top of other people's minds as well, false accusations or not. It's that process sitting there chugging along eating along 5% of my brain cycles all the time, self-conscious, analyzing. (Yea, I'm pretty narcissistic like that, I never really get around to analyzing if people I know are sexist, but I sure do get around to wondering if I can blame all my failings on gender stereotyping :P)

how to not?

I feel that this is a societal level thing. Yes, it's good for you guys to open your eyes and ears and listen more and try to understand. It's good for you to stop and think: when you take charge of the coding portion of a project and do lots of work, you might be putting your friends in a tough spot where they may greatly appreciate you getting the work done but feel put off by your not giving them a chance to be "counter-stereotype". But there is no need to obsess about how not to be sexist on an individual level, I feel, since life is a grand experiment and trying and failing is acceptable.

startups

Yea, I think about gender stereotypes when looking for a cofounder and reacting to people's suggestions as well. I have a somewhat irrational determination that I will not work as a cofounder with a guy (possibly even a girl) who won't shoulder at least half of the "nontechnical" work in a startup. I would rather go it alone than risk the possibility of confirming gender stereotypes (yes, again, my choices are dictated by these stereotypes floating around in society. I don't think I am confident enough to try being an individual instead of a Woman).

from an email i sent recently:

okay, so my knee-jerk reaction to this statement [...] i will explain that it's because i'm not confident enough about my own technical skills to make me willing to shoulder the businessy work, as inevitably it will then take priority over technical work. in addition, i am paranoid about any possibility of contributing to the stereotype that girls are more suitable for nontechnical work. exceptions being made if the target is what I consider underserved markets, then i care enough about the end goal to put my own fears and doubts aside to contributing to making something happen
since i have a decent internship i feel slightly more confident about my technical skills, i am willing to help out with the business-y stuff if you want, but prolly not enough to make me willing to be a cofounder or work long-term this way -- also why i will only ever cofound a startup with someone who is willing to at least equally share the business work, possible small concession on >= 50% share of business work being made if cofounder is female.

Shamelessly ripped from 2.671 materials, because I care more about there being fewer crappy posters in the world:
Differences between Posters and Oral Presentations

1. The poster should present a self-contained story
A reader should be able to understand your poster without need for explanation from you
You may be busy with another attendee, or have stepped away from your poster briefly
Any uncommon acronyms, abbreviations, or jargon should be clearly defined on the poster. As in a paper, all symbols used in equations must be defined
2. Unlike an oral presentation, complete sentences can be used, although bulleted or numbered lists can also be helpful.
3. A complete Abstract should be included, in large enough font to easily read from a distance of 1-2 m
4. As with an Oral Presentation, graphics and photographs are helpful, but there must be sufficient explanation in words of each graphic

How Do I DEVELOP a Poster?

First: Pick out graphs, pictures you want to include.

Then: Develop the Results/Discussion and Conclusion section. Lay out the text and graphics.

Next: What do my visitors need to understand the Results/Discussion and Conclusion sections? That will determine how much of the Introduction, Background, and Method you need.

Your Introduction is minimal but must show motivation: Why is this project interesting?

Background is also minimal - make it concise. Use equations if necessary.

Methods: Minimal - focus on Diagram/graph with labels.

Be sure to include references, acknowledgments.

There are no hard and fast rules about how to do the posters. It's mostly a question of:

Develop visuals and text so that the poster is understandable without intervention of the speaker.

Make sure the visual elements are effective, pulling the visitor in and clearly making the point(s) you want to make.

Focus on the Results and Discussion section and make sure it's clear - then organize the rest of the material around it.

Keep text minimal, concise. No large blocks of text, except in the abstract. See if you can bullet the text to make it easy to understand at a glance.

Keep in mind:

You can't assume your visitors know the material on your poster.

Ask yourself: Is there visual coherence, visual emphasis among the figures and graphs in the poster? A picture shouldn't just be included arbitrarily - it needs to make sense. You don't need to include a figure number unless it's referred to in the text.

Most importantly: The visitor's eye is drawn to the Results and Discussion section. A scientist wants the Results section to be clear.

Load system with more credits than manufacturer's spec max classes for optimal performance (A's), input command to pass classes, how long and does the system recover? System should be designed to maximize learning.

In other words, if I take way more credits than I should (based on experimental data from past semesters) for doing well, but only try to pass them instead of doing well in them, will I be able to pass all my classes?

System Design
Consider triaging of class assignments, as described in http://tech.mit.edu/V118/N15/dunn.15c.html.

Eric lists four questions that need to be answered during triage to decide whether a bug should be fixed or not:

Severity: When this bug happens, how bad is the impact?

Frequency: How often does this bug happen?

Cost: How much effort would be required to fix this bug?

Risk: What is the risk of fixing this bug?

The goal is to reach “zero bugs”. This doesn’t mean that the software is defect-free but that all known bugs have been deferred or can be rationalized away in some other way.

Heck yes! Virtual Zero commencement day, here I come XD

However, all the advances in issue-tracking and management in the world won't help me actually finish the assignments. I will continue my current non-rigidly-triaged system of assignment tracking and implement a better system over spring break (march 26th to 30th).

Thoughts so far
I'm feeling pretty upbeat. My grades are terrible, but I'm always happy, because I've optimized for learning in a way that is deeply satisfying to me: learn the jargon for and be exposed to a whole lot of classes, don't learn them that well, but know the resources at hand for diving in in the future (e.g. if I ever need it for a project) to learn on my own what I missed. Be able to at least know where I'm lacking knowledge or could be building things in a fundamentally better way, or as I ranted about on facebook, "I am envious of people who are good at math [or theory] and wonder if my engineering solutions are fundamentally crippled or limited in a way I can't even perceive due to my weakness in mathematics [and theory]".

Conclusion
By doing a breadth-first search, I able to say with more confidence whether or not my solution is fundamentally crippled or limited, even if I am not able to immediately design or solve for a better solution. This enables me to recognize my own limitations and call for help appropriately.
SUDDEN DOUBT. Am I right to be okay with not understanding math? Do theory-capable people have access to joyously verdant plains of insight I'll never catch glimpse of? "Teaching to unsuspecting youngsters the effective use of formal methods is one of the joys of life because it is so extremely rewarding. Within a few months, they find their way in a new world with a justified degree of confidence that is radically novel for them; within a few months, their concept of intellectual culture has acquired a radically novel dimension. The web-based Fitbit, available at a markedly reduced price and with several convenience factors compared to standard actigraphy, may be an acceptable activity measurement instrument for use with normative populations. Use of the Fitbit will also require specific validation before it can be used to assess disordered populations and or different age groups

*fitbit doesn't come with a manual and the "help" link on the website is pretty tiny so I didn't bother 'till today
(a) I feel 10x more energetic than last semester so I wonder how useful this will be. It's like the heavy caffeine earlier or maybe getting excited over January / IAP kicked me back into gear.
(b) I wonder if thinking about sleep all the time is increasing my sudden nap tendency. Observer effect?
I'd like to throw in that I had a BodyMedia FIT (a BodyBugg by any other name) and it wan't accurate on sleep at all, but appears to about equal to Fitbit overall for calories. We have done experiments with numerous subjects testing our algorithms and comparing them to research found in sleep labs. What we have found is that the vast majority of users seem to move in a very specific pattern when they sleep. A small group of users tend to make dramatically smaller movements throughout their sleep. The same algorithms work on both users, however a smaller movement on these very still sleepers indicates something different than a similar movement on an average sleeper. For most users regular is just fine. If a user writes in that they are staring at an alarm clock for an hour and the Fitbit Tracker shows them as asleep, we have them try the sensitive mode.
Huh, Cathy Wu mentioned power naps when I mentioned my ten minute naps yesterday (Monday) (only 1/3 did I get woken by alarm clock before waking up by myself). I was actually just following the instinct to "sleep then and only then when you feel sleepy", encouraged by the getting fitbit data out, instead of fighting this instinct with caffeine (what I've been doing this semester so far). I suspect last semester I got these urges too but they ended up as hour long naps, not a few minutes.

Research:
http://www.supermemo.com/articles/polyphasic.htm

Polyphasic sleep is quite widespread in animal kingdom. In a recapitulation of phylogeny, human babies also sleep polyphasically, and gradually lose their nap slots until they become roughly biphasic around the age of one. Human adults, as much as all great apes, are largely biphasic. Although a majority of westerners do not nap on a regular basis their alertness shows a slump in alertness in the middle of the subjective day. This slump can consolidate in a short block of sleep in free-running conditions.

However, the only valid rule of a thumb for maximizing creativity and alertness is to sleep then and only then when you feel sleepy. When this rule is applied, individuals may fall into a number of diverse schedules. They might be quite effective in any of these exemplary mono- and biphasic patterns: typical 7+2 or 6+1, long sleeper's 9+0, short sleeper's 3+1, or even 3+0, etc. Only you yourself can determine which schedule is optimum in your case. However, you can expect that if you are a normal healthy individual, this schedule will not be polyphasic. If you attempt 3+0.5+0.5+0.5, you will either be seriously sleep deprived (i.e. you will maintain the schedule only with the help of an alarm clock), or you will revert to 3+0.5, or more likely, you will fall back onto a standard 6+1 pattern. The possibility of hooking up your naps to the ultradian rhythm without sleep deprivations is a myth. Knowledge of chronobiology or an assistance from a chronobiologist can be of tremendous value here.

One of the myths of "Uberman sleep schedule" is that it makes it possible to enter REM sleep and skip non-REM sleep stages entirely. That myth is derived from another false claim that implies a non-essential role of deep sleep. I will ignore these claims as standing in total disagreement with laboratory findings and models of sleep. Instead, let us focus on a more plausible claim of the possibility of compressing sleep stages.

Some people like firefighters or emergency surgeons may sacrifice their sleep for the sake of others. Most of the remaining population though will optimize their sleep for best health and best creative performance during the waking time. Polyphasic sleep is definitely not the answer to such optimization goals.

I honestly think that my sleep habits are just born of bad habit, but for amusement, I will note that a hallmate Arka happened upon one of my before-2.003-recitation-dreading-social-interaction-with-TA-lolidkwhyamistillintheclass naps back during sophomore year

29 Sept 2010. according to Arka a few concerned people had appeared before he happened upon me and reassured them that this was normal for me. idk I didn't see anyone except Arka when I woke up

Conclusion
Protip: Indicate it's an intentional nap with e.g. a newspaper or book covering your face if you don't want to alarm people / have them wake you up "just to check on you" ^__^nrobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15422385347170954353noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1913473802550629755.post-66072761074954124212012-03-05T02:09:00.000-05:002012-03-12T00:19:42.761-04:00N51 Machine Shop -- persuasive research
I am pretty terrible at this whole process and don't really have a portfolio setup besides a picture slideshow off of picasa. This seems to not have received positive responses from people like Apple. Oops. ^___^;;

Yea, that's right, I literally emailed them a link to http://orangenarwhals.blogspot.com/p/projects.html. *sulks* I mean, surely the nyancats and hexapods would speak for themselves.

Some of my friends brought up that uhhh maybe this is not very professional and p.s. it looks like it was just thrown together.

This is true of course.

Then I contemplated making a real portfolio. But really, that's not what I want to spend time on right now. This is a common problem, surely there must be webapps for this...

Whoa look there's a list of portfolio apps!
Also, there are wordpress themes for portfolios.

In the end, I think Carbonmade wins out.

FolioHD
I like folio because they integrate videos from youtube/vimeo. Free version:
36 uploads, +mulitple image uploads, +mulitple galleries, +videos from youtube/vimeo.
-resume attachment. Which is fine for me, since I can just include a link to my resume pdf.
The main drawback is lack of theming, so I can't change the default homepage look so that it doesn't look so ugly with just two galleries.
paid features comparison: https://foliohd.com/upgrade

Mostly I like that youtube videos are integrated. Too bad there's not much choice in terms of free styles.
http://nancyouyang.foliohd.com/all

Ravael
I would like ravael (esp. since they limit to 100mb, not to #pics) but I like the image display flash popup thing less, so they lose on theming, but they do allow custom themes (selection of layouts and then you upload a CSS file).
http://raveal.net/p/nancy29888/portfolio
Paid features comparison: https://raveal.net/people/changeplan?execution=e1s1

Krop
Krop would win in terms of the default free aesthetic if they didn't limit me to ten images and no videos :( Also they don't allow multiple-image-at-once upload for free.
http://www.krop.com/nancyouyang/
Free: Basic10 image limit, classic-light style only.
Paid features: https://www.krop.com/profile/creativepro/
(also, look, pretty art: http://www.krop.com/terryfan/)

Carbonmade
Carbonmade wins on account of their user-interface and default free theming. Every change is live. And they allow a bit of homepage customization so that my homepage doesn't look so empty with just two galleries. But I can't integrate videos :(
http://nancyouyang.carbonmade.com/
Paid features comparison: https://carbonmade.com/signup ($12/month for 50 projects500 images10 videos)
Free: 2 of 5 projects19 of 35 images0 of 0 videos

Magnt
Magnt is more like ... I dunno, some sort of generic aggregated web presence. Does not fulfill my need for a photo/video portfolio of my projects.
http://nancyouyang.magnt.com/

Wix

I tried out Wix too, but don't like it as much. It's for general site-building, hich is nice and amazingly easy to use / customizable, but too much overhead for my dump-pictures strategy.
http://www.wix.com/nouyang/portfolio#!portfolio

Conclusion
Ultimately, I hope to roll my own Flask site, but in the meantime. Back to psetting.
I want browser-based (I use desktop+netbook+school computers, I don't use a smartphone or tablet). Google calendar... I don't understand it's paradigm (perhaps it's for outlook-trained users?).

email http://www.gtasker.com/ --> integrated with gmail, makes me appreciate the todo! but no weekly level overview

I feel that I would be really happy if gtasker and teuxdeux and tomorrow.do got together and had a baby. Or at least talked to each other, if they had an API or something like google scripts I would so totally write email scrapers that would stick things onto teuxdeux, and each day at 6 am teuxdeux things would get transferred to tomorrow.do and each night at 5am the things I pushed off until tomorrow would sync up on teuxdeux...

I also want to script an email reminder every morning, because Gmail is an universal interface I will never forget to login and check. And I want to write a text based interface to everything -- something like Paprika/Workflowy's text-based input system. I guess I'd need to write an intermediate script to scrape event data from my email (all the MIT events are sent out via email and I wish I could train gmail to better recognize events even if I needed to give it a bit of human input, e.g. tell it this email has an event and force it to guess the event data) and input it text-wise.

I wonder if I can scrape these sites to implement a limited version of these features...

/me adds to project todo list... on one of the webapps I just mentioned, but which one? hah.

Speaking of which, I just rediscovered workflowy.com which I was in love with for a while but then forgot all about it. I guess there's something to be said for those pesky once-a-month emails from services I rarely use: at least I don't forget about their existence entirely...
I wasn't terribly bothered by the stigma of taking pills (I don't like the taste of coffee, I don't particularly like sweet soft/energy drinks, I'm too lazy to keep brewing tea, and I'm a cheap student: it's way cheaper to obtain caffeine in pill form than liquid form). However, I was hesitant due to the stigma of requiring chemicals to help my be productive (e.g. wondering if I was deficient in not being able to simply motivate myself to work harder). Also, I wanted to save my caffeine tolerance for when I really needed it.

This semester, I've decided I don't really care how I get my work done and I have no pride in independence from chemicals. Also, encouragingly:
Constistent exposure to caffeine will induce the expression of the enzyme that metabolizes caffeine (CYP 1A2) in your liver, so you'll also need to wait until the elevated levels of enzyme decrease in order for your caffeine tolerance to subside. I'm not exactly sure how long that takes (probably a couple of days)

It seems the caffeine tolerance is not lifelong permanent but rather something that can be fixed in a week or even a month.
For some people with ADD/ADHD caffeine has a calming effect and can even make them drowsy. They seem to be immune to the 'hyper' effects of caffinated substances which only last short-term.

Hmm, I've definitely fallen asleep right after a caffeine dose last semester, and I doubt at the time I had much of a caffeine tolerance but cannot be 100% certain (how fast does tolerance build up? a day? a week?). I don't have ADD though. I think. Perhaps it's partly due to how confident I am in my ability to fall sleep no matter what I try;
"The people who say 'I can drink a cup of coffee right before I go to bed and go right to sleep' aren't lying." Hard biochemical research confirms the fact. Carney describes "one common strain of laboratory mouse, Jackson's Lab's SWR strain, inbred since the 1920s, who is just totally immune to the effect of caffeine: there's no dose that will excite him--not 100 milligrams per kilogram, which would be equivalent to 100 cups of coffee in a human.

After a quick search on google scholar, I don't really see any sources for caffeine effects variability in humans being linked to ADD/ADHD so I will regard it as unsubstantiated rumor.
The plan is that this semester, I'll experiment by dosing either 200 or 400 mg / day (one pill, around 2pm and 10pm) and see if that helps me stay motivated to finish all my psets. Of course, this isn't a sound experiment in any sense, since I believe I am less burnt out, more self-confident, less likely to make excuses and more motivated than the beginning of last semester. (But perhaps I was this on top of things last semester and excited, and things fell from there. I don't remember). This anecdote in particular:
Fast forward to college, and although we are still performing the same on tests, the reward for his diligence becomes obvious. I struggle through Calculus 1 and 2, combinatorics, linear algebra, and proofs. He picks up a Math degree along with two others at the same time ... a year faster than I complete my degree. He picks up stats, applied math, and a few other esoteric things (like x-ray crystallography) for fun. He does fundamental work in cancer research before he graduates.

Grants open up for his PhD work, and he gets his choice of programs at different schools. I have to pay my own way for a Master's degree. He gets kicked from the GCC mailing list for posting too many bugs. I almost get kicked from graduate school because I can't keep up with the lab.

Suffice it to say, it all came down to his early time and effort actually doing his homework. Seriously. The worst part is, after putting in several months at the beginning of slogging through his Maths homework, he could do all of the problems much faster than I. So, while I toiled on the minimum set, he could hammer out the homework in minutes and be that much farther ahead.

In addition, working with very motivated people this winter break has helped lift me from my skate-through-life attitude toward not completing assignments.

I hope the breaks (weekends possibly, spring break, summer break) will give my body time to reset itself. I've also allowed for ramping for each semester -- 600mg/day for senior fall, 800mg/day for senior spring -- in case caffeine is effective but I start developing a permanent tolerance to it. I really think I'll be able to stay on <400mg/day though.
ugh, 5 different labs to split my time between. 6.131 (9-23, and the one that edges me into overstressed-land), 2.008 (7-16), mas.863 (anytime), MITERS (anytime), UROP (set times). B TIPS:

* Cut pills in two. 200mg is a fairly high amount for one dose and you'll feel better (read: less jitter) with an extended dose over time.
* Combine with aspirin or an NSAID (like ibuprofen) for slight synergistic effects.
* LD50 is roughly 150mg/kg body mass. That said, watch your dosage. Heart palpitations suck.
* Being awake != being functional.
* Amazon Prime is your best friend for instant gratification.
Type pinyin into the Chinese google clone: http://www.baidu.com/
Also useful, use google translate to grab the pinyin for a block of text. http://translate.google.com/ and then click on the "A" (Read Phonetically) button. (It also has a read aloud option now).
http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/advice.html

I've been programming for a very long time. So long that it's incredibly boring to me. At the time that I wrote this book, I knew about 20 programming languages and could learn new ones in about a day to a week depending on how weird they were. Eventually though this just became boring and couldn't hold my interest anymore.
So, on other days, I remember to be glad that I have so much to learn and so many people around me to teach me. Because programming, for me and for now, remains a wondrous activity that I've sought to learn how to do for years and still don't really believe I know how.

That, I know, is a problem with my attitude. I'll always think there's more to something than there might actually be, because I've decided to worship the acquisition of some skills. Programming, the mill/lathe/lasercutter/waterjet, simply being knowledgeable... Wah, why is there so much stuff to learn?

In other news, at Code for America, we did rails training [edit: I first wrote this post 6/28/11]. The impression of ruby+rails I got was:
"RVM Synaptic apt-get wait the internet hold on let's try gem install"
"oh now gems won't work because I have a semi-right version of ruby but not gems"
"uh...
*terminal freezes for 30 seconds with no indication anything happened after I hit enter*
...yay UI fail"

Code code code. Feeling a bit overworked as I try to finagle my "it's summer" brain into working on my Media Lab UROP (mostly me learning electronics), code on Code for America work (which I admit is hard to do alone, and not nearly as fun as when I was at the office and everyone was chilling out and working with each other and I could feel not guilty about pestering everyone with questions), and working on My Own Projects. Due to aforementioned balancing act, I'm constantly swinging between "oh it's hopeless, why don't I know anything / why am I so behind" despair and "ahhhh this stuff is due" frenzied work.

Mmm... My Own Projects. Like cloning the hexabot Instructables. I love the feel of electric vehicles... so much quiet power. <3nrobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15422385347170954353noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1913473802550629755.post-50354221671136069152011-06-24T18:41:00.000-04:002011-06-24T18:41:24.394-04:00Code for America, Week 3: Why API auto-generator DNEWell, aside from dreaming of rideable hexapods, during the day time I am working away on code for america developer tools project. Namely, I have been learning about how to write a python API wrapper, and attempting to learn how to write a good one.

Stackoverflow was not so helpful in this regard:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/517237/howto-write-python-api-wrapper

Re: the autogeneration question that mashape.com is working on, RJ explicates:

I think you'll be hard pressed to automate this. Few if any APIs come with a machine readable description of what they are and how they work. This is because it's really hard. It'd be a great thought exercise to try and come up with a schema or ontology for APIs, but even if you did almost no APIs would use it so it wouldn't matter anyway.

Incidentally, the core of REST is this very thing -- self-descriptions of how to consume an API that eliminate the need for the API's wrapper in any given language from needing to know any hardcoded information about resources provided by the API. (e.g. the wrapper doesn't have to know that the Person resource is provided by the URL route /people/

Almost no so-called "REST API" is truly a REST API, because it does not provide this self-description. What people latched on to by calling things "REST" is that its simple, state-less, idempotent, and based on the 4 actions get / create / delete / put. Everyone conveniently leaves off that last requirement of REST because it adds more complexity and the way everyone implements API wrappers is by saying "let me read the API human documentation and poop out some Python that can do everything it's capable of".

another reason why auto-generating an API wrapper would be hard -- people, especially programmers, are highly aesthetic. Every target language has their own community standards and principles for how things are supposed to work (e.g. "Pythonic") so your wrapper generator will have to somehow account for this to not offend the programmer's sensibilities. My gut feeling is that most machine-generated wrappers will be stuck in some kind of uncanny valley where it'll feel crappy.

I think Google Protocol Buffers are a good example of this. While they are awesome, no way would you think that the code auto-generated for interacting with a protobuf was written by a human, because all the method names are very machine-like (i.e. pluralizations aren't quite English -- think "num_citys").

Well, you're right that this kind of thin-wrapper [edit:
around an API is not very expressive. As a Python API writer, I think I would far prefer something similar to how the Django ORM expresses database queries. Something like this would be nice:

class Business(RESTResource):
..
type = ... (enum type)
zipcode = ... (string)
..

businesses = Business.get().by_zipcode(zipcode).filter(type=business_type)

(nevermind that zipcode is not l10n-considerate)

Meanwhile, Zach, my fellow Python devtools intern, has been working on an awesome generic Python API wrapper template which is well-documented to boot:

Also helpful was studying the Sunlight Labs python code:
And looking at this, although perhaps it's not the best example:

These are all for the simple APIs, of course.

I've certainly learned a lot, but I'm also 100% the code I'm writing right is crap. That's okay though, I decided to forge ahead, learn things, and come back and fix it later. Otherwise, I'll never get anything done.

Oh also look we're on the internet!
http://codeforamerica.org/2011/06/15/meet-the-2011-cfa-interns/

And also fellowship applications are open~
Whew. It's been a crazy week for me. I didn't know what they expected, since I fall into a lot of categories:

Female

From MIT

Not a full-blown CS major

Haven't had a real programming job before

Have never contributed to open-source code

The first few days or so I lived in constant fear that they would find out they hadn't gotten what they'd bargained for (I seriously considered resigning). I'm closer to believing that they'll accept me the way I am, clueless and all. For a while I wondered: was I only here (despite my lack of expertise in python/github/FOSS development) because I was a female or because I was from MIT? Then the feminist side of me came out and was like "screw that I shouldn't have to think those thoughts, I was admitted for better or for worse so let's just get on with it."

Anyway, for me it's been a whirlwind tour of once again, getting over my aversion to asking for help. WTF, it's pretty obvious I'm completely inexperienced, why am I still afraid to show the extent of my uh lack of anything in my brain?

Hehe. Ah well, it's Friday, which is open labs (work on whatever you want), and I'm in a happy mood and fine with the fact that I still need to improve myself.

Learned/learning this week:

Github, git

Serious python development: nose, mock, coverage.py

Vi plugins: minibufexplorer, janus, solarizer, nerdtreeexplorer

Dotfiles .bashrc .vimrc .coveragerc

How to be humble and also how to not run away and hide in my dreams

APIs and devtools and how to write wrappers, RPC, JSON, XML, REST, http headers, chrome inspector navigator

App deployment (in 5 minutes o.o) and some of the services out there

Continuous integration server for python

Fabric, python eggs

Mashape

of course the craftier among us can reuse the cloth to create awesome individualized clothing...

but another solution might be the t-shirt printer (DIY Direct-to-garment:

combined with a soluble ink of some kind. Most t-shirt inks are designed with permanence in mind (to prevent fading with repeated washing). And the erasability of the ink has to be balanced against not wanting the ink to come out during a hot summer day (heat + sweat or rain). Ideally it would come off in ordinary washing machines, and it wouldn't stain other clothing when it washed off.nrobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15422385347170954353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1913473802550629755.post-25260330649252757152011-05-31T17:26:00.001-04:002011-06-13T00:14:15.811-04:00summer 2011 budget[Edit] 6/13/11
People are irritating, I'm a person, I'm irritating, and you know what? Who gives a piece of cake, it's fine that I'm human and flawed.

Mmm, cake. :D Yay indulgences of life during the summer... Wait, this is terrible, during term I justified it as stress-eating. >__> <__<

Wikipedia says of monasticism,

Sādhus strive to treat all with respect and compassion, whether a person may be poor or rich, good or wicked, and to be indifferent to praise, blame, pleasure, and pain.
Well, screw that, I'm not at that stage yet and have no desire to reach it. I want to be human and love and hate and not censor myself...

but I will still totally take up immortality. To have infinite time to learn things, why would anyone give up such a chance? Am I merely out of touch with being human, with passion and emotion and such, that I am only dimly able to fathom people who wish to die as their loved ones die?nrobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15422385347170954353noreply@blogger.com0
